PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Fred Rogers, better known as television's "Mister Rogers," a cultural icon and kindly neighbor to generations of American children, died Thursday at the age of 74.
Rogers died at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after a brief battle with stomach cancer, according to a spokeswoman for his production company.

Man Sues Hockey League When Son Isn't Named MVP
A Canadian father is suing an amateur hockey league because his 16-year-old son didn't win the league's most valuable player award.
The man is seeking about $200,000 in psychological and punitive damages from the New Brunswick (Canada) Amateur Hockey Association.
He also demands that the MVP trophy be taken from the winner and given to his son, who was the league's leading scorer.
The father says his son was so crushed at the awards banquet in March that he lost his desire to play.
An official of the league confirmed the lawsuit but declined further comment.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Many college age men may not be using condoms correctly, according to a small study conducted at one US university.
In a survey of 158 heterosexual males who used a condom in the previous 3 months, 30% said they had initially put the condom on upside down and had to flip it over. Forty percent said they did not leave space at the tip of the condom after they put it on, a technique that reduces the risk of breakage, according to the report in the August issue of the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
What's more, 43% of the men reported that they put condoms on after they started sex and 15% noted that they took condoms off before they were finished having sex, the report indicates.
Overall, nearly one third of the participants reported condom breakage and 13% noted that their condom slipped off during sex.
These problems are likely the result of condom-use errors rather than flaws in the condom itself, which highlights the need for better condom education and instruction, according to the study's lead author, Dr. Richard A. Crosby of Emory University's Center for AIDS ( news - web sites) Research in Atlanta, Georgia.
In other findings, the researchers found that 60% of the men did not discuss condom use with their partner before sex, and 42% reported that they wanted to use a condom during sex but did not have any available.
The survey was conducted at Indiana University in Bloomington.
