i think that there should be a standard for censorship that all cable/broadcast companies must strictly adhere to. there are broadcast channels that curse on shows, and then when they are run on the cable channels (not premium) they bleep out the words. if there was a standard, there would be much less bleeping out in syndications. also, i feel that filming companies should provide censor friendly substitutes for lines in movies, there are far too many movies where the movie gets screwed up because they try to replace the censored word with another one, and its just not believable at all.

I don't agree with you on that one Sithiee. You americans should do something about your cencorship. If a movie producer wants the characters to curse, they should be allowed. I think, that you should NEVER try to change the way of making movies in that direction. That wouldn't be fair to the writer. Bleep out the words or what ever in USA, but don't let your cencor trip come down on the countries that don't cencor stuff as much.

my apologies if the matrix illustration seemed confusing. it was meant to be an example that damn near everything--even movies the day they come out--can be found (uncensored) if you look/ask.

i deal with tv very easily. i quit watching it. i watch maybe ten minutes of sportscenter in the mornings and part of whatever game happens to be on if i'm home at night.

censorship sux! i like the ratings system you sometimes see on canadian shows, it tells you at the beginning and after commercial breaks whether or not the show has explicit content (just to warn parents) and then it shows all without any annoying bleeps or scene edits. that's the way it should be - isn't anything else a violation of the right to freedom of speech?!

and yes, kids in the hall rocked! it was one of my fave canadian shows. i wish it hadn't been cancelled!

kolben, you misunderstood what i was saying. here, when they show movies on tv, and they censor out a word, but they need to have somethign there, they just have some joe schmoe try and say the word in its place. what im saying is, since the makers of the movie know this, they could provide a verson thats been precensored, so the network doesnt have to kill it with bad impersonations. and i agree, censorship sucks, but there is a need for it. i really dont think that little kids need to start cussing as soon as they can talk, or watching porno. i think that cursing is losing its edge, it used to be in movies and such, when someone cursed, it was so rare that it really emphasized whatever was happening, but now i think most people are jaded to it. same with sex, i see so much sex and such on tv, im not sure its really gonna be that exciting when i get some (yes, i admit it, im a virgin)...would you really wanna be jaded to that?..im gonna end this now

Ok I get your point. In Denmark we've got a different minimum age for each movie. That age has been set by 10 cencors or so. They see all the movies we import and are doing quite a good job I think. Underage kids can't enter the theatres or rent the movies, as people is quite strict about it here. I don't mind sex in movies. I don't get offended. And I think that cussing is a natural part of a lot of movies. If I got shot in the legs I would curse like hell. I wouldn't go "dang it". I would go "FUUUUUCK YOU ASSHOLE". I with the idea of making an other version of the movie for US TV, but the original version should still be available, for other countries, that allow sax, violins and people cussing.

I don't know if you knew this, but actually the movies we get in Denmark are often longer than the ones in USA. This is because they don't cut out the rough parts of the movies. They just raise the minimum age.

A big problem with censorship that I see is that it tries to discourage behavior by ignoring it. That's like trying to discourage kids from dangerous sexual behavoir by simply refusing to talk to them about sex or STD's, or anything like that.

"Gee, maybe if we make sure our kids will never see anyone taking drugs, they will NEVER, EVER think about taking drugs!! That makes sense!!"

Quite the contrary, I think. I think that movies like Trainspotting should be shown to kids in Grade 10 or so. Can you think of a better way to give an anti-drug message that will actually stick? I can't remember a single "educational" video from my days of health class or CALM (career and life management), but I still remember some of the twisted shit in that movie.

i get shit at school for saying "bad" words in class. i have to respect my english teacher, she only gets offended my fuck and cunt, nevermind the fact that she let last years class listen to all of adam sandler's medium pace.

what really gets me, though is that we can't watch movies if there is too much bad language. are they deaf? do they not listen to the hallways. ever hear what happens when a finger gets slammed in a locker.

eh, it's sort of related to censorship.

i hereby recant everything i said on this thread. i checked on the "french started canada," and yea, i was wrong. ya got me.

about defending american tv, i'm stopping ever since i saw them edit the word "beer". i shit you not. i was watching the list on vh1 (they were doing best rock anthem, i wanted to see how high slts got. fuckers didn't even mention it) when the host started talking about college and said beer. and they edited it. i was extremely pissed, and now i agree with you. after watching tv for a couple of hours straight for the first time in a while, i can say the majority of american tv sucks.

about censorship, yeah, it sucks that they edit out every cool scene in the movies on tv, but either see it in the theaters if you care enough, or if it's a song buy/burn/download the uncensored version. ironically, i am listening to dmx while writing this and each song would be about 40 seconds long on the radio, not joking at all. i ripped it, no problems.

i'm all for no sex on tv until after 11 or so and free speech. kids hear it anyway, they're going to say it anyway, so why get a bug up your ass about it?
