don't install a web server from microsoft. a better one would be apache. since it looks like you are using windows, i would say get a version of apache for win32. then go from there. you won't need ftp since it's all on your hard drive, but you can always install an ftp server too. if you want perl, get active perl and set it up to work with apache. if you want php, you will have to find php for windows (never tried installing that so can't really help you out). great thing about this is that you get complete control of what's going on with your server.

Joel ...you will also need to keep your computer on all the time. And get a static IP address and register a domain with a DNS server. You can use my DNS server if you want.

I figured out what I am going to do.. I have a shit box 400mhz, 96mb ram 4 gig hard drive computer...and a cable connection with a static IP. I want to turn that into a web server.
Wiley, how do I go about the DNS Thing? I don't fully understand that aspect yet... Thank you for your help.

you can register a DNS name at http://hn.org. you provide them with a username and ip and it will resolve http://username.hn.org to your ip. there are a few other free ones. so it's either that or wiley will get you a domain name. next step is to figure out what OS you will be running, what webserver, what do you want on there (as in perl/cgi/php) and what about security (whether you need any, and if so, what are you going to use).

I was thinking simple...I'm not one to have a big site, or as many users as say....detnet. Windows would probably be easiest for me to do stuff in, but linux would probably be better? (suggestions?) I'm not sure about what webserver to use...I'm new at this but I want to learn and best way to learn is to attempt. CGI/perl/php, I know nothing about. I don't think security is a big issue...I have a way of backing up the info...which I probably will use. Unless you have suggestions for cheap easy to use security software?

Register an available name and when you see Technical users: Configure your DNS enter the following namesavers: slimshady.cbk.net ns1.pickleland.com Then email me what the domain name is and what your static IP address is and I will add your name to my DNS.

There are lots fly by night discount name registrars, but I wouldn't use them. The guy I got my current domain name from used one and they went out of buisiness. Network Solutions / Verisign sold the name to me ...even though he never missed a payment. Now I got it for the next ten years and he's pissed. That's what you get for trying to save a buck.
