no there isn't if you want a name all to yourself. if you want something.com then it will most likely cost you. www.godaddy.com has better deals on domain names from what i saw. but if you are not picky and don't mind something like user.hn.org then you can get a free one.

Hmm, so if I want a joelthegreat.com name I'm going to have to pay?...and if I don't want to pay some other company's name is going to be in my name (joelthegreat.hn.org?) well that kind of is no fun. Thank you for the info.

i agree that something.hn.org is not half as cool as your own name, but for $10US a year for .net or .com name is not a bad deal at all. can't really say you can't afford 10 for the whole year. but then again, it all depends on how much this name means to you. i always found i don't care what domain name i use as long as it does what it's supposed to do (i mostly use my FreeBSD box as pop3/smtp server, though it does run apache/php/perl/mysql)

www.apache.org is what i would go with. look around for win32 binaries in the download section. it might be a while till you learn how to set it up properly since it's all about editing text config files. i've seen utilities out there to simplify work, but can't remember what they were called or were to get them. either that or you can get a hold of either Windows 2000 Server or just IIS and install that. then if you want SQL, install MS SQL, install ActivePerl if you want perl and something else for php. I am not sure if there's such thing as mod_php for windows, because that would sure make things easier.

PHP for IIS is very easy now. They even wrote an installer that does most, if not all, of the work for you. I've never used apache for win32, so I'm not sure about that one.

Why do I get the feeling that I'm going to be asking some pretty stupid n00b type questions about setting this up?

joel:
1: if you're not on ME/2k/XP, pick up this: Microsoft package installer
2: then get this:(Apache installer)
3: post a new topic in this forum for config help, as soon as you get it installed.

Don't worry. I think I have that title.
