yeah, i did mean jim.

and as far as how i don't know shit, jim, anytime you want to rag on college and how easy and stupid it is, try it for a while.

let's see YOU go through four years of engineering school and see how well you do.

unlike someone who sits around bragging that he gets paid ๞K to sit and surf the web, i went to college because i was good, i was smart, and i wanted to be *better*.

i guess it is easy to pay more in federal taxes than someone who's going to school full time and still working 20 hours a week. you know, considering that you don't pay tuition.

face it jim, you haven't said *shit* here that wasn't on tech tv or isn't in the msdn i get for free just because i'm in college.

you can rag shit all you want jim, but i guarantee you can't find examples of me talkin any kinda leet speak.

so next time you think show (sic), you just go ahead and take on an engineering degree.

it sure as fuck ain't no multiple choice test.

and thanks, heaves.

I'm pretty sure she was talking to me. She has some kind of fetish with pissing me off.

Deep down I think kuru is a guy pretending to be a chick for attension. If you read through enough of her posts you'll see where I'm coming from.

Anyway heeves. I can understand you sticking up for kuru since she's your 'girl'friend and all. But the fact is I'm good at what I do. I didn't need to go to school to have someone teach me, I was smart enough to learn everything on my own. I have that analytical mindset I guess. And the reason I get to spend all day surfing the net IS because I'm that good at my job. Tasks/problems that may take one person hours to solve take me minutes to seconds to solve because it just REALLY comes naturally to me!

If you have a website... Oh let's www.travelocity.com (since I'm in charge of that one) And the site goes down for 2 hours and you loose ๥,000. Would you say that it's worth ๞k + benefits for me to sit around on my ass all day JUST IN CASE IT WENT DOWN??? I think so. Now add in getthere.com, sabre.com, virtualythere.com, and the 3,000 other webs Sabre hosts. Including some really huge ones I can't talk about. Normally I would just say them, but I think there are some people here that hate me enough to get me fired if I disclosed them.

If any of our servers go down, the clock is ticking and money is being lost at a tremendous rate. You say I'm over-paid, when in FACT I'm under-paid!

Hrm... first thing that comes to mind is a problem with the subnet, but that seems to obvious.. bad DNS setting?

Keep in mind, I'm really quite non-leet and am shooting in the dark.

I work for Sabre.
10,000+ employees NOT going out of business.

So the same can't be said about me.

I just happen to be that good at computers/networking/databases/ and a lot of other technical stuff.

And I don't have to
+4|_|{ |_1|{3 +|-|15 +0 |*|20v3 1+!
or
+@LK l1K3 tH15 +0 Pr0VE i+!
or
+4L|< l1k3 tHi5 t0 pR0\/E it!

Point is... I don't have to ACT like kuru does. I've been actually working professionally as a techie for almost 8 years now!

Not going to school so I can just say I'm good. I've been proving it!

Hate to take sides here, but kuru, you stepped over a bit. I know you two have been at one another's throats but that's usually justified. Your comment wasn't actually. I'm in the IT field too (duh) and it was quite good to hear that news from Jim, thus rendering it 'less obvious' to many people as I'm sure that I'm not the only one who didn't know what he posted.
So isn't it a bit bitchy to say that anything he posted is a bit 'obvious'? Haven't YOU ever given people info that loads of others new already without getting accused of posting somehting obvious?
Christ, if you have kids someday, what are you gonna do when they come home to tell you they've discovered that the sun is actually a star or something pretty elementary in the grand scheme of things? "Dumbass, everyone knows that!" or "That's right, would you like to go to the planetarium this weekend to learn more?"
take a pill ffs.

I never said it was easy. It would however be a waste of my time.

Give me one good reason I should go to college. I'm already where I want to be. I'm where most people want to be! I just didn't HAVE/WANT/NEED to go to college to get there. Matter of fact I still have my GI Bill from the USMC begging to pay for my college. If I DO ever go to college, it will be to get a business degree to help me open up my bar. You see, I don't know a whole lot about business, I DO know alot about technology. That's what I do for work, and as a hobby. I didn't wait till after high school to decide that's what I want to do, and then have to run off to have someone teach my how to do. I've been doing this shit looooong before I was old enough to work.

Who wouldn't brag about a job like this? But you can't get this job by just walking in and saying "I want to surf the net."

I guess that just makes me smarter than you, than doesn't it? I work 40 hours a week (if that), and I don't pay tuition OR have to sit in a classroom. I do still have to study and stuff like that, but my job pays for any training that I want.

I'm not sure exactly what TechTV is, but it sounds pretty cool. I guarentee some people didn't know that Whistler was going to be the same test as Win2k. And if you DID, where exactly did YOU learn about? In college? I guess again, I'm smarter than you. I didn't have to pay anyone to tell me that piece of information.

Why would I get an engineering degree? Why? Just to say I did it? I've accomplished far more impressive things than that! In real world situations, not phantom standard bullshit made up by some proffesor. I live a world where I have to react to a situation, I don't have time to study or search for the answer. I have to fix the problem in minutes or seconds or be fired!! Much more stressful than getting a 'D'. One day you'll be where I am, and fully understand the difference between the real world, and college. That's why they say college is to PREPARE you for the real world. If you think college and your precious engineering degree is hard.... HA! Just wait!!!!

'sic' you stupid asshole, means that i deliberately misspelled and used the wrong word because YOU did in your post. maybe if you went to *college* you woulda fucking learned that.

but as usual, you're just an inflammatory idiot.

you're not where 'most people want to be', and you're sure as hell not where *i* want to be.

yes, it's possible to learn how to write html and watch a bunch of server lights by reading books you can get for free at the pubilc library. it's also way to banal for my tastes.

aside to willypete: no, i wouldn't do that to a kid. a kid is supposed to learn, sometime in elementary school, that the sun is a star. jim, for all his bragging, should fucking know better than to think he's done somethin on the order of discovering a new planet by posting something in a GEEK FORUM that most geeks would already know.

back to jim: you know how to *use* technology. i'll give you that much credit, because you have earned that. but you don't know how to *make* technology. so before you shit on me, remember you wouldn't have any servers to watch or computers to program on if someone like ME wasn't out there designing those fuckers. k?

jim said:

i wouldn't.

i also don't 'have' to sit in a classroom, i chose to. so i could be more than an html monkey and a blinking light jockey.

no, i didn't learn about the win2k and whistler test being the same test in college. i just knew, duh, that whistler is the codename for a win2k revision so it stands to fucking REASON that the test would be the same.

quote:

I don't have time to study or search for the answer. I have to fix the problem in minutes or seconds or be fired!!

if you were half as good as you say you are, you wouldn't be fired in a matter of seconds.

running your mouth off about college is pretty damn stupid, jim. you wouldn't know how hard or easy it is, because you've never been there.

unlike that 'real world' that i've been in since i was 17. being in college doesn't mean you're not in the 'real world'. last i checked, i don't get a freebie from having a job, paying rent, or dealing with bills just because i chose to go to college to improve on the good mind i already had. if you wanna get stuck on this 'college isn't the real world' thing, well, you need to remember that even for a full time college student, it's not everything. some of us just include college IN the real world we live in.

as for me being 'some guy' who's pretending to be a chick, well, keep your sexual hangups to yourself, kthnx.

I hate to point out the OBVIOUS again. But, it extremely OBVIOUS that you have NO IDEA what is involved in my job. Especially since I use ZERO html in my job. I do that as a hobby. And as far as blinking lights go. I see my servers ONE time when they arrive, and the rest of the engineering I do remotely. I can guarentee you that you CAN'T do my job.

So you are calling WillyPete stupid now? Since he just said that was a nice piece of knowledge that he wasn't aware of, even though he's in the same general line of work I am... Damn you are a ruthless bitch!

That's actually a false statement. I'm very much capable of creating technology. I worked in the Electronics Maintenance Company in the Marine Corps for quite some time. I'm fully capable of laying out circuits boards and such. But that's not fun. Niether is programming routers which I tried for some time. I could have choose to be CCIE and made 100k+ easily, but that wasn't for me either. And neither was management.

Go loose a company a couple hundred thousand dollars and see if you don't get fired... I was hired because I said I could prevent that. If I can't then I most definitely would be fired and replace by someone who can.

True. I don't know what it's like. Which is my point. Some people WANT/HAVE/NEED to go to college. I don't!

Let me clarify. After you get a REAL JOB!!

One that's not minimum wage hourly that involes a uniform and saying "Can I take your order please."

I don't even know where to begin with you, Jim. You seem like a bit of an ass, but I'd still like to go get a beer with you some time.

We're both in technology, and we both have interests in different ends of it. You enjoy supporting systems, I enjoy creating them... in fact, I hate networking with a passion and would rather not learn too much about it if I can avoid it. My college degree and the internships I held during that time taught me so much about system development, and I enjoy it.

If you want to play the analytic skills pissing contest, try this on for size:
Build a device that takes vehicle emission measurements as a car drives by it at 50mph. Not only that, but actually build two completely different hardware setups, both running the same software. The system must have a modular software design, run on a realtime operating system that you've never seen before until recently, must calculate the gases coming out of the back of the car from tombs of data coming from the sensors, correlate it with speed and acceleration measurements, store one or more pictures of the back of the car with the record. Each record must be stored on the system until it can be offloaded and sent to a central facility (this building) so that the data can be processed, validated, archived and delivered to the customers in the format they desire. Then, take into account that there will be enough of these systems (anywhere in the world, mind you) that millions of these records are showing up in this building each day.

Keep in mind that I'm the only software person working on this until our second guy starts in March. The software has to be designed so that every record is kept secure, the device can't be hacked into, and servicing is put to a minimum, etc. Anything beyond that is proprietary and I can't disclose or else we have patent problems.

I may not have flashy skills that can be demonstrated at a moment's notice, but I'm a damn good engineer... and that's what I want to be. You can't just jump into a position like that. One of the purposes of engineers like us is to make things as easy as possible for the techies that have to support the stuff we create. Our goal is to make your position worthless. It may not happen, obviously, but it's what we strive for. And, for the record, I get paid significantly less than you... probably underpaid.
