YOU ARE CORRECT SIR!!! 3 of the CDs are OS. I haven't seen regular server yet either...I have 3 OSs. The other CDs are (I'm reading titles off CDs):

Customer Support Diagnostics
Driver Development Kit
Language Pack

..none of which I will ever use, coincidentally. The other two I seem to have lost. I think they were more driver stuff. Maybe one of them had a bunch of Los Alamos Nuclear secrets.

mmm... skinz... though there are almost certainly some programs that won't like 'em. That's actually the case now with custom desktop themes. I have one that's almost all black. Some programs look fine, but MS Word, IE, and Nutscrape 4.x look like shit. Hopefully Microsoft will be bright enough to allow you to disable skinning on a case-by-case basis.

I don't think Whistler is WinME with a Win2K kernel - WinME is the Win9x codebase made to look more like Win2K in preparation for the move to using Win2K as a consumer OS.

And the Whistler interface kicks WinME's ass - the new start menu - the new login screen - multiple log-on sessions - plus better multimedia latencies - *fapfapfapfap*.

I haven't tested Whistler on my multimedia-laden system yet, so I don't know if it will fix the problems I have with 2K. 2K works so beautifully it makes me cry - EXCEPT with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and a few associated tools. Multitracked audio has a horrible lag, some of my DirectX plugins don't work, and Retro AS-1 completely flips out, reporting -2189789866\% CPU usage and other oddities, including the fact it doesn't do anything but squeal.

So for now I'm still stuck with dual-booting 98/2K and stuck with FAT32.

Goddamn, I want to use NTFS!!!!

Eight CDs? What the fuck is that? There are 3 versions floating around right now: Whistler Personal, Whistler Professional (recommended), and Whistler Advanced Server (Server seems to be hiding, IIRC). Each comes on one CD. Maybe you have a bunch of debugging stuff, or something.

I have my copies because of my MSDN Universal Subscription. It should be around enough that if you ask that one guy who seems to always be in the know, he probably has a copy.

And, you are mostly accurate on the WinME thing. It really is basically a continuation of the Win2K development (or, more accurately, a branch). It's the NT Kernel, with some of the UI design concepts brought from WinME. There are some compatibility modes built in for running things that don't seem to run under NT. I think that stuff was supposed to be in Win2K, but it wasn't ready for the show at release time. It's mostly an extension, and not built directly in.

DING DING DING!

Whistler is a REVISION of Windows 2000, not a new OS. It's a new OS as far as marketing, I'm sure.

quote:
From Win Informant.com:
To the Microsoft training department, Whistler and Windows 2000 are in the same product family, and thus the exams are identical, as far as their credentials are concerned. If you begin training for Windows 2000, and wish to substitute Whistler exams for some of your qualifications, you may do so.

Are you talking to me?

For someone who doesn't know much about anything except for sucking dicks, you sure find a lot of time to run your mouth.

I'll have you know that my "Tech TV" watching brings me home ๞,000 a year, + my stock options I get every year, + my \% of the VCP (Variable Compensation Plan [Big word of Bonus])....

What do you make again? Where exactly do you work? Micky D's??

Thought show. Put the dick down and shut your mouth.

I'd be willing to bet I paid more in Federal Taxes this year than you had taxable income.... Care to take me up on that one?

Well, I went to school, and I'm about 8 months out now. I immediately started a job I love after graduation, a salary I'm happy with for entering the work world. I guarantee you that in 8 years (or maybe even 4), I'll still be happy with my job at the time, my salary, and where in the world I live. I didn't go to school to be able to say I'm good. I went to school to become good.

I have to imagine Kuru is the same way. Funny thing happens while in school. You tend to learn things that you don't by having a job requiring you to surf the web. Your ๞K salary + benefits tells me you're overpaid... not necessarily overqualified.

Have a nice day
