OKay, I'm going to level with you. My dad is a Mac addict. He has only owned apple products, and I have suffered for it. Thankfully I am now 18, graduated, and going to Michigan State University next fall. My parents gave me a 񘘐 spending allowance on a computer. Combined with 񘐜 from graduation gifts and my job, that brings me to a grand spending total of 񘯬. (U.S.) Because I have been around Macs forever, I am sending a distress beacon to all computer experts. Please post your suggestions for a computer less than or equal to 񘯬. Thank you.

P.S. If you have no suggestions, just post something about how Macs suck. Your thoughts are appreciated.

I mean, seriously, compare the cost of a brand new G4(is that what they're called?) to a similar PC (as in speed/memory). With 񘯬 you could buy one kick ass PC system...

Happy, that G4 will blow any PIII out of the water, thats why its so damn expensive.

if you want a really high-end machine, there are a few small companies that make killer machines, they use all name-brand parts, and its all setup, tested, and ready to kick ass straight outta the box, without having to worry if that dell has a โ motherboard holding it all together.
and with 񘯬 bucks you can get a hell of a nice machine. anyway, here are some sites for you to check out

No offense, but those companies (alienware and the like) are woefully overpriced. I would recommend a micron or a dell if you want a quality pc prebuilt. Stay away from superstores!

I found a good site online where you can get good custom built computers for fairly cheap: http://www.cyberpower.com (I have dealt with them in the past with excellent results.) I'd recommend getting at least a PIII 800, get at least 256 MB of RAM. For a graphics card, the Geforce 2 GTS is good (I have one and it rocks!) but expensive. If you aren't going to do much gaming, but want TV and DVD I'd go with the ATI All-in-Wonder, it is excellent. Make sure you get a good MotherBoard as well, in fact that might be one of the most important things in your system. Intel chipsets generally are quite good. Abit and Aopen are good brands, Asus is half-way decent as well. For sound, get an SB Live family card, (Value or Platinum or whatever), and Altec Lansing surround speakers are good. A 19-inch monitor is good for starters, a decent 21-inch would take up about 1/3-1/2 of your cash, leaving you with a system that wouldn't deserve the monitor. That's all I can think of now.

They offer some kickass pre-built systems or you can make a completly custom one.. not sure if they ship to the US or not

(remember all dollars on that site are canuck bucks)

Yeesh! They might consider getting someone to design a better website for them. Prices look good though, as far as I know exchange rate is ũ.40 to the US dollar now, so just multiply the figures by .72 and you'll get the approximate American price.

񘯬 is a hell of a lot of money for a new computer. Seeing as it is your first non mac computer you should probably get a pre-built one. I recommened going to dell.com and ordering one from them they are nice and are cost efficent.

good call neotope, try the dell site, or get a catalog from dell, i get em all the time. let me say right now that i wish i had that much money to put towards a new box. once you get a cpu that you like, hopefully you didnt spend all of your dough on buying the prebuilt, and you can use whatever u have left to tweak it and buy some add-ons so that youve got a real good system.
