Replaced my HP 4400 with a new one ...all is well now.
I can scan at will.

if you have IE5.5 type
ftp://detonate@ftp.cbk.net/uploads
in the address line and use detonate when prompted for the password. Then link to your file using
http://cbk.net/detonate/name_of_file
