I had to completely reinstall Windows 98 and all my software, and I lost most of what I was working on because some idiot thought it would be a cool idea to delete some files in rather important directories. That's the last time I let my brother do anything with my computer. Anyone ever heard of "If you don't know what you're doing, leave it alone?" Especially if it's computers. Well at least I was able to keep all my cookies, else my password would have been lost to here. I don't have any of my emails anymore, and had to rebuild my address book from scratch: for some reason the new installation of Windows doesn't want to import old wab files, it gives me an error message whenever I try to do that. So pretty much my whole day so far has been wasted. Some people just plain suck. At least I kept backup copies of all the programs I downloaded off the internet.

she does anyway..its funny having to go back sometimes because the shit she does is so retarded anyone could figure out how to get out of it. lol

my brother used to yell at me all the time for touching his precious computer- now I dont have to

This is one of the most used features on NT (Windows 2000) in my case ... Lock Computer.

You better believe everytime I get up I turn that on, it's almost a force of habit now.

So at most someone could unplug my computer, but that's about it.

Well it's all back up except 3 programs I could not find but which aren't really important. The only neat thing about the whole ordeal so far is that I now know every little detail about what's installed because I just barely installed it. I should be able to keep track of it better now. Also, it boots about 10 seconds faster now, and I have yet to get a single error message of any kind. Registry backups are down to 1.3 MB instead of 1.9 like they were, so it must be a lot cleaner now. And for some reason I have about 500MB more harddrive space than I had before. I guess I better check to see if I installed everything.

I have now officialy declared my computer off limits to any and all in the household by setting up a power-on password in the CMOS that no one knows but me, and no one else knows enough about computers to clear the CMOS so that's done.

I use NT at work and at home. My SO uses 95 and im always trying to "lock" her computer when i get up from working on it. Thank god im not using dos at home anymore but my linux box does go into shutdown mode if im logged in as root. Talk about puzzled looks when that happens....

Or you could use Norton Ghost to make a drive image of your system. You just rebuild your system with all your program files, and make an image. If it's small enough, it fits on a CD. BTW, data like mp3s shouldn't go in it. My collection is too dynamic for that. The other way to keep your email safe is get an IMAP-type mail account. Keeps your messages on the server so you don't lose them from your own system.

Suggestion: Partition a smaller sytem partition and put only windows and office stuff on it. Then regularly backup important stuff or use a utility and copy stuff like bookmarks, WABs/PSTs, cookies etc on another partition/floppy. I often mail it to myself at work. That way if it goes, I forward the same back to myself.
Good idea about power on psw, you could even try pswding your screensaver and set to 2/3 minutes.
If you're 2000/nt make sure other people only access as users, not admin or power.
