but a program called ghost whould do what you want its made by binary research but i thin symmantec bought them out

it may be undeditable, so i suggest a disk sector editor, i think i have one laying around here somewhere...sect editors can be real fun...

Okay, I never had to do this and now that I need to, I dont know how. Can any of you "l33t hax0rs" tell me how to assign a serial number to a disk? Not just arbitrarily, but to give it a specific number? Is there a program that copies the disk completely, with serial number.

If i remember rightly that's set when formatting. I still don't know of any programs that let you edit it..

Why do you want to do that? I remember back in the days of trading warez when you would download the individual disks of some programs, some programs needed to be put onto a disk, and furthermore, some checked the volume label to make sure that it was a "valid disk" during installation.

But something looking at the disk serial number...never heard of that, not have I ever bothered to mess with that. Are you sure that you just dont want to change the volume label?

I would also use Ghost, and yes they were bought out by Symmantec a little while ago.

Found a way to do it..wasnt that hard actually, and yes, norton "disk doctor" i think it was called lets you change it.

What it was for is a buddy of mine has this software which (cleverly) allows you to move its key to several computers but it can only be active on one computer at a time. You can't move the key file yourself you have to use their "moving program", part of which looks at the serial numbers on the disks, so you cant make a copy. But we 0wned th3m!!
