I have the Pioneer DVD-R drive... If you need to make video DVDs, then there isn't much choice in the matter. I wouldn't use it for regular data backup because the media is so expensive (I haven't found DVD-R media for less than $3.50 each)
Unfortunately the process for authoring a real video DVD is a pain in the ass. it's not like making a CD of MP3s where you can just throw the files onto the disk; you need an extra software package to encode your videos into MPEG-2 and set up the menus, etc... Decent authoring software is quite expensive (>$1000), but if you just want to burn home movies then you could probably get away with a cheapo authoring system. (beware though, as in most cheap software, it is dumbed down so much you may have difficulty getting it to do what you want =).
I have been using the cheapo authoring software that came with the burner (it's made by the same company that does PowerDVD, forgot the name). I have only finished one full DVD with it - it "works," but the interface is very annoying & not very flexible.

I'm with Wiley. Why would you ever need that much storage? I loaded all my tapes onto floppy and I haven't filled up an entire disk yet, and they're "only" 360K.

What the fuck? That's downright impossible to have 2000 posts in nine days. The flood control doesn't allow it!
