I need some opinions from other geeks (geeks used very loosely) how good dvd-rw drives are to see if i should get one.

edit: I need it to save many home movies. Also to use as a primary backup device.

best wait till the idiots decide on a universal standard. Theres about 7 different ones at the moment and they're all being replaced by updated versions requiring new drives  ???

I heard.... HEARD being the keyword they are working on one standard for dvd just like with an audio cd.   I think its called bluedisc or bluebook or something .. don't quote me on that I caught it in a tidbit somewhere.

It's blue-laser.
supposed to come out next year

edit: it can hold something like 27 gig of stuff.
yeah 27

they've finally gotten blue laser diodes to the point where you can put them in a drive have they?

as far as the 27gigs, well yeah, I mean look at how narrow the bandwidth is for blue light.

Next thing y'know they will have 50GB HDDs in home computers!  Why would anybody ever need that much space  ...that's cazy.  Why would you ever need more then 64K of RAM?

unless I'm mistaken, dave was talking about < "blu-ray" >.

I have the Pioneer DVD-R drive... If you need to make video DVDs, then there isn't much choice in the matter. I wouldn't use it for regular data backup because the media is so expensive (I haven't found DVD-R media for less than $3.50 each)

Unfortunately the process for authoring a real video DVD is a pain in the ass. it's not like making a CD of MP3s where you can just throw the files onto the disk; you need an extra software package to encode your videos into MPEG-2 and set up the menus, etc... Decent authoring software is quite expensive (>$1000), but if you just want to burn home movies then you could probably get away with a cheapo authoring system. (beware though, as in most cheap software, it is dumbed down so much you may have difficulty getting it to do what you want =).

I have been using the cheapo authoring software that came with the burner (it's made by the same company that does PowerDVD, forgot the name). I have only finished one full DVD with it - it "works," but the interface is very annoying & not very flexible.

I remember something about a disc that could store a TB on it ... anyone got a link?

I'm with Wiley.  Why would you ever need that much storage?  I loaded all my tapes onto floppy and I haven't filled up an entire disk yet, and they're "only" 360K.

What the fuck? That's downright impossible to have 2000 posts in nine days. The flood control doesn't allow it!
