"kthx" is an abbreviation (notice two 'b's in 'abbreviate') for "k thanks", which itself is a shortened form of "okay, thanks".

The literal difference between the meanings of "thx" and "kthx" is negligible, but "kthx" has a certain inflection which makes it more suitable for usage in certain circumstances. Exactly which ones is hard to explain.

BTW, the sentence in question is not "shut the fuck up k? thanks." but rather "Shut the fuck up 'k thanks, am hax0ring, 'k thanks."

Better said, however "short and snippy" is closer to what I was getting at than "bitchy, snotty". I don't really conceive of "kthx" as having a "bitchy" subtext to it. How about "short, snippy, and slightly fruity"?

it's not hard to explain. kthnx is used with a bitchy, snotty, mean tone of voice that is most often used when someone is trying to be dismissive.

the nicer, more upbeat, sincere versions are usually along the lines of thx or ta, without a k in front of them.

if someone actually says 'ok, thx' they probably really mean it. but if they say kthx, they're being short and snippy. it is just how it sounds, there's no space in between there, giving the impression that it's been said really quick and sharp.

ok, cr0, i've just always seen it used in context where it was short, snippy and had a 'you are dismissed now' kind of connotation to it.

anyway, i wouldn't use kthnx if i really meant thank you.
