The National Transportation Safety Board recently
divulged that they had for the past five years
covertly funded a project with US auto makers
whereby the auto makers installed black boxes in four wheel
drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in
fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15
seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find
in 44 of the 50 states that the last words of drivers
in 61.2 percent of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Shit!"
Only the states of West Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi,
Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee were different,
where over 89.3 percent of the final
words were: "Hold my beer and watch this."

i'm abhorently against those black boxes... but i can totally beleive the "oh, shit!" statement.. i've used it myself in numerous auto accidents.

Well the 'oh shit' exclamation happened in my mind, at the latest incident. But really I was just sitting there... thinking, "that jackass! We havta hit him now! Good thing my dads a lawyer! Ah! I love this car" Stuff like that.

Grew up in Georgia. I would believe that stat. If you want to see the theory in action, there is an in-car video from one year at the SCCA Solo II nationals. If you've ever autocrossed, you probably know this feeling.

the black box doens't really record things inside the car.. just the speed, traction control, break pressure and all that shit.. to see how fast you were going, and if you tried to avoid the accident.. the project originally started out to help auto makers design the cars better to accidents... turns out they created a device that makes the driver testify against himself. isn't there some dude sueing GM for the blackbox on his vette or something.. rearended some woman at a high speed, and most of the charges would get droped if they take out the box in his vette from the trial.. i don't remember whatever happened to that triel.. can't find it anywhere either...
