Just because they won't give a person money to do this doesn't mean that that person will instead help find a cure for cancers. There are only X number of people in this world that have the ability to find a cure, and they are already working on it. In most cases, throwing more money at them won't make any difference. It takes time and a little bit of brilliance, which you can't buy. So let these people discover that cats can get cancer from smokers, it isn't going to slow down the research into a cure. Hell, this may even lead to a quicker discovery since they now have some data from a difference species! It might help find the common things between the two and allow us to zero in on exactly what causes it and how to cure it. And this may be a little sad, but it might actually make people stop smoking. Smokers obviously don't have any respect for their bodies, or why would they be smoking. But as soon as they learn that their "precious little kitty" could die from their habit, they may stop. Kind of fucked up priorities if you ask me, but I bet it's already happened a few times.
