A local Lansing convenience store chain, called Quality Dairy, (henceforth to be referred to as "QD") is very prolific in the Lansing area.  Their rule for buying alcohol requires a valid MICHIGAN I.D.  I was under the impression that driver's licences, marriage licences, and the like that are issued by one state are recognized by all states, because the constitution says so.  Are small buisnesses exempt?  Is QD breaking the law?  Could an Indiana resident buy beer at QD?  If someone knows a law that makes this make sense, feel free to tell me.

I've been to more then one bar that wouldn't take out of state IDs.  Mostly I think it's because they keep changing and it's impossible to keep your door staff up to date on what a real ID should look like.  One in particular wouldn't take an out of state ID but would take the piece of paper that the DMV printed out for me when I lost my drivers license.  It had no picture and it was printed on a dot matrix printer  ...and they accepted it as valid ID.  My friend from CO was screwed though  ...especially since I drove and he had to wait in the car while I drank and played pool.

Yeah, when I was in the Military, I brought a buddy home on leave with me.

He had a Florida State Drivers License, AND his Military ID, and they wouldn't let us into 4 of the 7 clubs we went to in Dallas.

It was fucked up.  However, when I went home with him to Florida, I never had that problem.

state governments have to recognize the ID.  private businesses are free to set their own policy.  QD can make any policy they want regarding what's acceptable, so long as it includes the restrictions set forth by state law.

businesses are not subject to the equal protection clause, that applies only to government.
