Hey hey hey, I was the guy who put the 355 in the chevette. And yes, mig, tig and arch welders are all but required for any of the "fun" projects.
How far down can you dial your mig wolf?

if i run pure argon i can weld beer cans end to end but i have this theroy on structures. If i have to turn down my machine to weld it, it's not going to be strong enough for my needs.

for welding Aluminum you need to run straight argon. if your going to be welding a lot of aluminum get a machine with a spool gun. this holds the wire spool right on the gun and it keeps the wire from making those pretty birds nests.
for steel a 75% CO2 argon mix is used.

50# tank of argon is ~$75 and the mixed gas is about ~50
lasts for about 5-800 hours of welding.
