It doesn't really force you to share. If you really are opposed to it, set you max Upload to 10 and leave the value for Download at 0. It will limit the upload, and if you move the files out of the directory when they are finished, no more sharing. It's just the in process sharing that's mandatory.
I really do suggest the article at Sharereactor that shows the simple little tweaks... it's helped alot.

at the minimum you have to share while downloading it, also if you only have it set to 10 it'll limit your upload to 30, you have to have it at 12 last time I checked to get past the 3x multiplier, at least that's how it was when i started

Heh... it's pretty rare that I'm using 30 though, unless I've got a whole page of stuff downloading at once. Therein lies the problem with PtoP... your connection is only as good as the other side.
