i have just spent the last 15 mins trying to connect to the net, cos i've got a project due at midday, it's now 1:00am, and i have to get some stuff from my email to do it. and my isp decides now is the time to crap out and reject my connections. now i'm wide awake and can wait for a few mins, but what pisses me off more is that i'm fucking paying for each connection attempt. one or two dropped connections i can understand, but 8????? i even tried signing up for another isp with a free trial kit i have, i am that desperate for that mail. and that server sucks ass too. i am just waiting for south africa to get some decent fucking technology and brains so they dont fuck up my life any more

Forgive me for sounding like a tech support guy but here it goes:

Not being able to connect and not being able to connect really has to do with two issues. You phone line and your modem. There is very little you can do about the phone line (call your phone company and do a clarity of signal check on your line). The modem can be helped (if you are running windows). You will want to set the max connect speed down to 57600, and set you conenct timeout up to 90 seconds (to do this look for "Cancel the call if not connected within [60] seconds." on the "Connection" tab in the modem properties. Here is the trick (I have had this bight me in the ass so look out). You need to make those changes in the Modem Properties in the Control panel, and the specific Dial Up Networking properties for them modem. If you do not make the changes in both places is won't mean dick. Also find out what modem protocol your ISP uses (x2, K56Flex, v.90). Get an init string for your modem and use that. Some modems have a hard time discovering what protocol to use and will fail the connection.

I know this all sounds simple, but when I did alot of tech support, it worked 8/10 times. If you have Win95, you can get two updates from Microsoft.com that will help with the DUN issues.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading awhile ago that Windows doesn't use modems correctly. Something about trying to use it as an ethernet device. You could fix that by hacking the registery a little, or something, and it would "optimize" the modem. I dunno, read that somewhere... I think it was on packet storm...

and i'm quite certain its my isp, not my modem or phone line.
ah well, next year i'll be working at a l33t company and i'll eat all their bandwidth so i wont have to worry!

edit: quoting someone who quoted someone else doesn't always work
