I think something needs to be done to protect the oppressed Christians in this country.  We all know what happens to minority groups, and < only 76.5% of the nation is Christian! >

They're in danger of being wiped out... whatever shall we do?

The server was down for about 7 minutes total.

Bet you can't guess how I know that!

I think there have been some 2 million christians murdered throughout africa and the middle east in the last several years. I don't know where to find numbers on that though because the liberal media in all their PC intellectualism doesn't want the average joe to know what Islam really stands for.

Wiley, do you just throw your brain out the window when you sit down at your computer or what?

Being a Christian myself, I'm more worried about those of 'us' living in the U.S. than those abroad. Sure, they're dying but the church thrives even and perhaps especially under persecution.
What I'm worried about is damage to the church from influences in American culture. First, I'm seeing a definite shift away from religion in general in the average citizen. Worse, I've actually seen a lot of anti-church and anti-religious sentiment lately(most notably a thread on the Doomworld forum).
While that's all well and good, I've seen an increasing number of conflicts within the churches as well. Granted, religion's always been a battlefield, but it seems that there's a lot of infighting lately.
Personally, I think a lot of it comes from people trying to change and 'popularize' the church. Make it more PC, acceptable to outside views, and get more people into the church by any means.
So yeah, I'm a little bothered by the whole thing.

No, it's only when he goes into <CK> mode.  I thought that was quite obvious.

Watch Fox News, that's about as far from liberal as you can get, and not be talk radio.
Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 14 2002,23:25
yeah but fox news isn't really conservative, it's just in the middle. you guys just think they are right wing because you think the left-wing is in the center!

Yeah, CK, is there a defined scale you're using for this?  I think it -might- be a little subjective.

Here's a tip for everyone.  Sit down with Islam's version of the Bible and read it.  That is Islam.  Anyone doing anything differently isn't Islamic.  They are something else pretending to be Islam.  Same goes for Christianity.  Too many people in this country say they are Christian when they act like anything but.  They think that believing in Jesus is enough to to make them Christians.  I say that unless you actively try to live your life as layed down in your Holy Book, then you aren't really part of that religion.  You just want a label so you can feel like you are part of the "community".  That's why I don't even pretend to be religious.  I don't agree with what most religions say, so I'm not going to just chose one so I can say to someone "Ya, I'm <instert religion here>ist".  But that's just me.

I was raised Christian, went to church 2 hours every Sunday, been surrounded by bible thumpers and I actually met several real Christians.

They never talk about it.

They live it, and I figure it out by their behaviour.

music.gif i think this gif is cool

Western society is based on christian ethics. a lot of stuff like celibacy was how society interpreted what the Bible said. Therefore to say you need to live you life like it was 1600 is silly as some people do, but demonk is right on how people say they're Christians when they aren't they just don't believe it but pretend to cos they have this slight belief in god and such and think that self denial will do the rest.

So by your admitted lack of fact we are to assume that you just pulled the two million number out of your ass?

an absolute that CK probably understands better than most people on this board.

poor and uneducated = stupid and violent.

----

Christianity and Islam are both under attack by the who claim to represent it the most.

Some people are gonna be very surprised when they go to meet their maker  devil.gif

edit: don't mean that as an insult, CK.  I been mobbed plenty of times too  whatsthat.gif

what I meant by that wiley was that I couldn't find it in 5 minutes of googling. I originally heard it on fox news I think. I've also heard similar figures on the radio as well.

dsl--agreed

one book published by a Christian organization does not count as "a good source."

1. A lot of people, not just Christians, are being tortured / killed in Sudan.

2. The situation in Sudan is being covered.  < CNN.com search on Sudan. >

3. It is not the job of mainstream news to tell you what you want to hear or to say it in a way you want to hear it.  Their job is to report facts that can be verified.
Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 17 2002,05:57
whats a good way to end slavery and mass-murder in sudan? make them the UN chair of human rights!

dsl--they aren't doing a very good job in that case lol. remember that whole "massacer at jenin" thing that the media were all over? showing a panoramic view of collapsed buildings when in fact it was just 1 block? insinuating that the IDF leveled the whole city? giving credence to muslim news reporting that thousands were murdered? these were all reported the mainstream media. very bad job indeed.

oh yeah and never retracting their statements or correcting their mistakes, unless it is in their favor

I'm thinking they cheated on that page, and put 'Nonreligious/Secular' where people had actually said 'Jedi Knight'.

...which would kick so much ass.

I found another good example of liberal media outright lying to the public for political gain:

Washington Times: "Greenspan gives economy an "OK""

LA Times: "Greenspan calls scandals a threat to recovery"

I always check my links after posting them.

LA Times din't go thru.

Jess cut n paste it, we have tons of bandwidth.

please explain how those articles 1. lie and 2. show liberal bias.
Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 18 2002,03:15
the la times article basically lied about what greenspan said in the headline in order to sensationalize the issue. these are all from the LA times article:

Quote
Greenspan Calls Scandals a Threat to Recovery

..."The U.S. economy is poised to resume a pattern of sustainable growth," the central bank chairman said. But only, he added, after current problems "linger for a bit longer ... and absent significant further adverse shocks."

...He appeared to oppose Congress doing anything to change the way U.S. companies are governed. "Remember, the system is frayed, but it is not broken," he told lawmakers.

...The fact the nation has not taken a steep fall to date is a testament to the economy's new "resilience and flexibility," he said.

CK; i hate to break this to you, but all media is biased one way or another, although some are more extremely so than others(read; national enquirer, weekly world news)
Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 18 2002,06:37
I agree but you can show the difference between moderates who either show both sides (fox) or show neither side (wash times, ny post) with bias, and the obscenely biased ABC, CBS, CNN, wash post, ny times, etc.
Posted by TheTaxMan on Jul. 18 2002,08:34
All the news shown on television revolves around those stupid Dolt vs. Dolt segments that do nothing except increase rating because the masses enjoy watching people beat each other with objects.  Since that isn't aloud, they beat each other w/ politics.  If you're 'watching' American news, you're really not getting much except a sound byte.

Argue against that and then go turn on the TV and watch it.  Tell me how it goes since I can't stand to sit there.
Posted by demonk on Jul. 18 2002,16:27
I agree, it doesn't matter where you get your "news", it's going to have a bias.  That is because the stories are written by humans, which by nature are biased.  Doesn't matter if it liberal, moderate, or conservative, there is always a slant to the story.  That is why you must look at many different sources in order to see the whole picture.  But, at the same time, just because sources are biased doesn't mean that EVERYTHING they say is a falsity.  If they say a person broke into a house at 2:32 am PST, then I'll believe them.  Now, if they say he was a dopped-up crack fiend, I take that with a very large grain of salt.  And yes, it is all just a big ratings grab.  How else to you explain shows such as "Celebrity Boxing" and "When <insert some asinine noun> attacks!"?
