I'd go for Honda/Acura first (unless your name is Jacques Villeneuve or Olivier Panis and you're a F1 racer), then with Mazda (even is some parts are made by Ford, the overall quality is a bit higher), then with Toyota (go Celica!;)

Dodge trucks.  (NEW)

Ford trucks. (pre 97)

Chevy (GMC) trucks (pre 80)

Gm cars.  Just way to much you can do to the motor, trans, and rears of these cars.

Hemi (mopar product) motors. (if you can find them) that and the 351 was a good motor.

What do i want to drive?  1968 cammaro convertable with a blown 427cid motor out of a vette with a custom trans and rear to handle the ~800 hp to come out of the motor.  Keep your rice burners.  this thing will suck a honda through the intake and burn it for fuel!

for everyday driving i would take one of the big Benzs.  If your going to get a comfortable car you may as well get one built by people that can get a million miles out of every  engine they ever made.

GM(Period)  Specifically GMC and Hummer.  You won't catch me driving anything else.  Period.

Im with Jim.  Im not saying theyre perfect, just the lesser of all the evils.  Plus its what I was brought up on.

Ford has extensive head gasket problems with their 93-98 cars, especially the 3.8 v6.  They're automatic transmission is run by BELTS instead of hydrolic fluid, ecu programming that makes "find the wumpum" look like shuttle launching code, and who can forget that whole bridgestone suv flipping over and killing people thing.  Almost all of thier trucks drive like cars, which is ok if you dont actually use it as a work truck.  If you do you better have a f250 or 350.

Now they get credit for the engineering and ingenuity.  They have some of the strongest rear ends available.  The ford 9" is a monster.  They were the first of the big 3 to go to Dohc in thier muscle car.  Now whether it works well or not is to be seen.  Its getting there but not as perfected as pushrod.

Mopar has not made a decent transmission since the torque-flite in the old hemi days.  Talk to 1/3 of all durango owners and 1/2 of all avenger/sebring owners and they'll tell you how it wont go into or out of first gear.  The whole bottom half of their car line has engines built by mitsubishi... we wont get into that but its not the best for reliability.  Their trucks are stout, and mostly reliable.  Not the best on fuel economy but if your buying a 1 ton truck you probably dont care much about that.

Mopar gets props for slapping 2 extra cylinders on thier sports car.  The only of the big 3 with a 10 cylinder.  Its a monster engine but will grenade itself at will.  At willow springs track in cali vipers hold the lap record for speed on 1 lap, none of the 3 cars that set that time finished 3 laps.  All had mechanical failures.  The next closest time for a viper to actually finish 3 laps is number 36th.

Gm has had close to the same designs save the body work for close to 50 some years.  They have made no major changes besides the aspiration and looks of their line.  They still use a pushrod engine in thier trucks and sports cars.  Its very reliable at the cost of some performance.  I had 435,000 miles on my camaro before I swapped the engine.  Dont let anyone tell you american cars as a whole are unreliable.  Now they did make some bad decisions with the saddle mounted fuel tanks from the late 70s early 80s and if you have a truck with thier vortec engine you should definatly get rid of it by 50,000 miles.  The fuel injection system on the vortec's has what we will call "issues".  But I have a 91 S10 that on more occasions than I have fingers, toes and other extraneous body parts had all 4 wheels off the ground.  I have put some of the hardest 100,000 miles on and the only repairs needed so far have been replacement grilles, but usually that was due to me hitting something.  The chevrolet tahoes and GMC line of trucks still cease to amaze me with the durability and usability they provide.  They fit somewhere between fords sedan like comfort and dodges "Im a fucking truck and Ill bounce the shit out of you if I feel like it"  yet they still perform like an all out work truck.

Anyway enough ramblings.  Your best bet is to talk to owners and take a look at the nhtsa and alldata recalls and complaints.

Alright Jim, I like hummer and all but do you really need to climb a 60* incline or offroad enough to require that nasty of a suspension.  Im willing to bet the only real offroading you do is driving to the store for milk when it snows, which is once ever 10 years since you live in texas.

Now if you must have something that can pull better numbers than your hummer for what ever bigger dick contest you're in with your neighbor get one of < these >. They surpass the hummers abilities by far.

Edit:  Much cheaper too.

there is only the Land Rover. all other jeeps/all-terrain type shit are just poor copies with spoilers. i went up an mountain in italy in one once. when we eventually crawled our way to the strange camp site perched on top we were surrounded by the inhabitants cheering and laughing. which was odd. turns out we were the first vehicle to make it up the track for over 30 yrs. everyone else used the cable car on the far side of the mountain. the last vehicle to make the trip was still there and was used for driving down as far as the treeline to collect firewood. it was also a Land Rover. they let us stay for free. Land Rovers rule.

I do not and will not name any vehicle in that price range that can go toe to toe like you said.  Because you know and I know there isn't such a thing.  The hummer is basically it's own vehicle class IMO. I don't beleive it to be a truck, jeep, suv, and it isn't a roadster for sure.

And who are you calling a dumb fuck? (wow, I'm up to 200 posts and now people start to learn...he he he) I mean look at you.  You live in Texas to start with (that's -20 points in my book), and you buy into consumer fad's. The SUV fad, which Hummer is going to try to milk along with the H2.

Actually, yes I do.  As already stated in another thread by me.  As a rock climber, I'm often going off the beaten path in search of bigger better faces to climb.

Go look up rock climbing + Texas on Google, and check out some the terrain at Hueco Tanks, some places down in Austin.  Not to mention some of the places I go in Oklahoma and Mexico.

I've already tried this terrain in a Jimmy, a 4-Runner, and Yukon.  All of them get hung up in one place or another.

One of unique things about the H2, is say I go over a 22" fallen tree.  Where-as any other vehicle would get hung up on the drive-train, the H2's slick bottom can actually slide right over it.

I've got one.  Fun for recreation, not fun when you need to haul 500 lbs of gear and 6 people.  And it's certainly no good at hauling a boat.

Come on people.  If you really insist on trying to down play the Hummer by saying I don't need it, you are wasting your time.  Attack the vehicle, not me.

A land rover isn't shit compared to a Hummer H1 or H2 for that matter.

So what is the point in bashing it, when apparently you know as well as I do.  There is no competition for it.  NONE.  Nothing, not even the H1 can compare to all that is offered by the H2.

If you take, Off-Road, On-Road, and Conveinence into consideration.  The H2 accels in all.  The H1 only accels in 1.

Again, another attempt at bashing me for buying a vehicle which I will be using for all sorts of things.  I can see calling a soccer mom who uses a SUV for nothing more than picking up kids a fad.

But all things aside.  Show one vehicle.  Any vehicle!!  That can do all this.

As far as the .50 is concerned, you can NOT mount a .50 cal on an H1.  Only a HUMMV, sorry monkey.

As already stated many times.  There is a spectrum.  If I could afford to keep my work vehicle, and buy an H1 as an off-road vehicle.  Well that would be kick ass.  As it stands right now, I can't afford an H1 PERIOD.  What I need is a vehicle that can servre multiple purposes.  From trips to work, to bars, to home depot, to the great outdoors.  And for the first time, there is actually a vehicle, that not only can I afford, but I don't have to sacrifice ANYTHING.  I get everything I could ever possibly want in a vehicle, and the icing is that it's a HUMMER!

I think I've made my point.  No more use arguing with a 4 year old.

And I'm totally with you, LEET,  on the people who slam their trucks and shit.  And trust me, I've got great concerns about the H2 becoming a soccer mom vehicle.  But rest assured mine won't be.

Oooooooo, sarcasm.  Impressive.  It'd make more sense if I said I had 700lbs of guns.

500 - 750 of Guns, Ammo, and Camping equipment includes the guns owned by me and 5 of my friends when we go on shoots.

This includes shit loads of ARs, AKs, FALs, H&Ks.  Plus all the ammo cans.  Plus all of the equipment used to repair, clean, and maintain the weapons.  Plus a day tent, 3 sleeping tents.  Our clothes, MREs, chairs, radio, spotting equipment.  Steel B-Mod target plates.  Etc, etc, etc....

It's probably more than 700 lbs considering how low the ass end of Shanes F-250 sags when it's fully loaded up.

Damn ...I got got so used to debating CK I was expecting you to come back with "It doesn't count because of X stupid reason so I still win!!"  It is a pretty sweet SUV though  ..and it's a freaking Lamborghini (not like the name means anything anymore since the company is pretty much dead and buried).  But I've always wanted one of them.  It used to be on this TV show that ran for six months called Nasty Boys about a group of undercover vice cops that raided drug houses and got to keep all the cash as long as they turned over the sellers and the drugs.  It was a pretty kick ass show.  Mostly car chases and shoot-outs.

Um ...Mr. car enthusiast, you do know that the Testarossa is a Ferrari right?  The Diablo kicks some ass IMO  ..held the title of fastest production sportscar for quite some time.  Has 2 and 4 wheel drive versions and came with matched luggage and a $10,000 (removable) dashboard clock.

It's not the same company anymore, it used to have history.  Lamborghini was started by a tractor manufacturer when Ferrari wouldn't sell him one of their cars ...he vowed to produce a car that would outclass Ferrari.
