On the TF2 Engine
There's an interview with Gabe Newell at Cold-ice.com asking five questions of the Valve Software head honcho mostly about TeamFortress2. One answer in particular, "TF 2 will ship with a new engine," seems quite newsworthy, as it had previously been understood TeamFortress 2 would use an updated version of the engine used in Half-Life, itself based on the Quake/QuakeWorld/Quake II engine. This previously unannounced answer is offered in such a brief, offhand manner, we tried to contact Gabe to make sure this was not a misunderstanding before posting it. After not receiving a response all day, it seemed we should go ahead and make the post, noting that we're hoping for a clarification, or more details on this from Valve, but at this point that's all we know of this.

I would just like to say, that since I didn't start this thread, I got first post.

Now it is time for me to go back to my 24/7 EQ marathon.

I really doubt it. That goes about everything I've heard/seen about the game. He was most likely talking about the netcode.

Dunno, he says new engine

I'm unsure, especially as they've said up to now it was modified Half Life engine based.

I seem to remember reading that in a PC Gamer....although it might've been a different game...

Exactly how much of the code has to have changed before you are able to call it a "new" engine?

And of course, how new is new?

With text books you have to change 20\% of the content to call it a new edition. Maybe it's the same for games' code.

A "new" engine would imply something without any code from the q2/hl engine.

New in this case probably means changing the engine from 16-bit color to 32-bit color to quell the Color Zealots.

It seems to me that TF2 has been delayed about as much as Diablo 2 has been up to this point, maybe a bit less. Definitely less than the game whose name must not be spoken less Romero hears. You know, that game made by Ion Storm whom in all their wisdom PATENTED the term "Suck It Down".

dammit, i just broke the law......

Color Zealots? What are you talking about? Oh, you mean people that actually care about image quality and not just frame rates.

Obviously you have a suck ass video card, because there is a HUGE difference between 16-bit and 32-bit color.

I for one will not play any game in 16-bit color anymore.

Let's all bash the Voodoo 5 6000 some more! We've lost sight of those precious things from the comments!

oh, maybe i should mention that i play all games at 1024x768 in 32bit color with all options cranked up on my aging Matrox G400?

i just like to start controversy :-)

eng is right. 32 bit color is by far better than 16... 16 is just, so... unl33t.
of course i remember the day of mario when 8 bit color was a stunning advance in technology
