I have realized it's easier to delete.

Debate all you want.
Insults, no.

No more warnings, just deletions.

I find this entire turn of events highly irrational.  Then again I really don't care what the rest of you do with your time.
Posted by CatKnight on Jun. 05 2002,19:32
are you and dsl the sole judges of whether a post is an insult, a retort, sarcasm, or a good post? if so, I don't think you should be making arbitrary deletions.
Posted by editor on Jun. 05 2002,19:43
This is not a democracy.

I am so sorry to be here now.

CK, sometimes it's better to be in the background.

Sometimes I deliberately not post when I like the writer.

On the other hand, I've started deleting.

I'm up to three.

You really do want me to leave, eh Kevin?

no. (insert real name here)
Posted by kuru on Jun. 05 2002,23:24
Well Kevin, if it's going to go down like this, and you're just going to keep deleting posts because you don't like them, I am leaving.

And I'm not going to be the only one.
Posted by editor on Jun. 05 2002,23:28

three
I am not sorry.

What is  wrong with you?

When the hell did you become this mean?
Posted by editor on Jun. 05 2002,23:36
I became possessive about this place.

Someone has to.
Posted by kuru on Jun. 05 2002,23:38
The DetVets were.

Those of us who have been here longer, understand more, and are part of the community.

You don't even deserve to own it.

Kuru, I have spent many an hour thinking about Detnet.
I may be right, I may be wrong, but I'm the owner now.
I'm not happy now.
Posted by kuru on Jun. 05 2002,23:56
I'm sorry I ever helped you when you needed it. I made a mistake then.

When you're sitting here alone, I hope you'll be happy then.
Posted by editor on Jun. 05 2002,23:59
I love Detnet.
Posted by kuru on Jun. 06 2002,00:00
Then quit killing it.
Posted by editor on Jun. 06 2002,00:02
You know a lot more about the internet and computers and stuff.

Damn, you teach it.

This is my house and I'm doing the best I can.

I'm sorry if it's not good enough.
Posted by kuru on Jun. 06 2002,00:04
This isn't a computer problem, it's a human one.
I regret helping you because you've turned mean on the people who built this community.

You showed up late in the game and you got possessive of the football and now you want all the rules to be different.

You may make yourself the referee, but all the players are going to leave the game.

Am I tarded?

I just wanted to get a grip on the fighting...

I have always had a "hands off" approach to Detnet.

I don't want to touch what isn't broke.

If I'm wrong, I'm sorry.
Umm, does anyone think I did ok with Detnet?
Am I that bad?
Posted by CatKnight on Jun. 06 2002,01:16
is it just my imagination or does editor sound like a bot? all of his posts are very short and pointless.

I'd get a little mean and defensive too, if I shelled out a bunch of cash to preserve a community and all the members of that community did was shit on me.

kuru, you're a detvet.  I've been given that title, but only just barely.  Maybe you should start showing some positive leadership and offer support to the only person who's really trying to preserve your precious community instead of throwing gas on the fire.

You flaunt your experience and maturity in everyone's face all the time.  Frankly, I haven't seen it lately.  Mostly what I've seen is a bunch of petty, childish attacks on ed and a couple of others.  And before you start, no I'm not flaming you.  I've appreciated many of your posts for being intelligent, informed, well-phrased and appropriate.  However, your self-avowed knowledge of the community should give you a greater understanding of what it really needs.  I didn't see much of that before the blow-up (which, granted, I wasn't here for).

I love detnet, too.  I hate to see it in these potential death throes.  If you understand/love it as much as you claim, then stop tearing things down...help build it up.  Ed keeps asking for help, but I don't think anyone actually believes him.  I do.  I think he really wants this place to be great.  I don't think that deleting posts was the right thing, but he thought it was best for the forums.  I disagree, and so do you.  Why don't we try to figure out a way that it isn't necessary.  How does that sound?

beldurin, you've got it all wrong.

you can't summarize a story after hearing only one side of it.
Posted by Beldurin on Jun. 06 2002,06:04
Then please, enlighten me...if not here then via email or IM (beldurin on aol).  That isn't sarcasm btw...I would honestly like to hear as much of the story as possible.

I'm not trying to take sides, because I don't think that there should be sides.

Last night I listend to DetVets and DetNetters tell me they were leaving because of the new rule in which editor would delete posts if anybody got, in his interpretation, mean to someone else.

I reacted out of anger first, anger at being told I (and others here) needed a babysitter because the tide of detnet includes the times when we heat up and flame the hell out of each other. Because it was forgotten that there's another side to that where we can flame someone one day and then be civil to them in another thread somewhere else. And after being angry, I was sick. I was hearing from people that they were going to leave, and getting the impression from editor that he really intended to drive the plane into the ground.

After talking to editor, I have the understanding that he does not want Detnet to die. He perhaps never understood that the 'fighting' was part of the nature of the community, and that we generally end up making up (well, there was syph0n) in a matter of time. I've urged him not to spend most of the day here, because it does nasty things to a person who gets too emotionally invested in every post.

Now, I've asked editor to relax on the babysitter-thing and to not delete further posts but to understand that he's joined a community here. The community does not want to see itself die, and it generally doesn't get too worked up about a fight or something.

To the DetNet community, I have a few requests. Please try to save your anger for Rants, and if you must roast someone (we all do at times) do it over there. If you are a person being roasted, please understand that Detnet does not hate you, and a few flames to get an argument out of the way means we can all go have a beer together (even you underage people). If any of you really are bothered by something, please click on the e-mail link and contact an admin. Admins are here to serve this community, not to rule over it (IMO, anyway. I am a servant of Detnet). I'm available by Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, IRC and e-mail, and if someone here feels they've been seriously attacked, I will try to help resolve the matter.

Lastly, for now, please give editor some space to breathe. Continuing to jump on his back at this point isn't going to improve anything. If you want to rant and rave to someone right now, yell at me. It won't be held against you.

Here's to the future.

I haven't been in the forums much, every now and then I looked around and now I actually started posting.  So I may seem just like some lame n00b to everybody.  blush.gif
I like this community, I've been coming to detonate.net for a year or so now.  I'm no vet, but I am a fan. (not the kind that spins round and round and round and round) And I do not wish to see it die.  I was very unhappy when it wasn't really up and running. But now that it's actually starting up again I'm glad to be here for the re-birth of the site.
A viable option to all the flaming and name calling and post deleting and all...Well you have area's for people to Rant, talk politics, submit links...why not a place for people to put there full flame on and just insult each other.  It could be full of flame wars and bad jokes about peoples mothers.  That way you wouldn't have them popping up in the middle of a political debate, or just when editor is asking for help with the site.
Good Idea? Bad Idea?  I don't know, it's just an idea.  Use it if you want, ignore me if you must. I just don't want to see this place die.  Peace alien.gif , Love inlove.gif , and Cheese Soup withstupid.gif !!
Posted by kuru on Jun. 06 2002,19:02
That area is kind of covered under 'Rants' since they include rants against each other.
Posted by joelthegreat on Jun. 06 2002,19:29
True.  I didn't really relize that, don't blame me, I'm new. baaa.gif
Of course, rants also have just general rants where you can get support from other people on how you feel about something... Right? (if I'm wrong I'm sorry) I was thinking a place where that's the sole purpose is to allow you to tell someone they are a donkey raping shit eater. Or maybe just a place for the editor to cuss out the community for their behavior to relieve his stress and not go delete happy and accidently delete the site?
hehe.gif
Posted by kuru on Jun. 06 2002,20:43
Welcome to 'Rants'. ;)

Seriously, I have always believed that's what the 'Rants' forum was for. Classroom had a bit more decorum, Politics is the most structured, Senior Lounge is for the Vets to go talk amongst themselves, Sex is obvious...

OK, seriously, I missed the detonation of Fat Man on the boards here, so I may not be qualified to say anything, but it seems to me that in the past, members have worked out their own problems (I remember spats I had with l33t_h4x0r_d00d) in their own time, without moderator approval.  Editor, Kuru hit it on the head when she said that constant monitoring is bad.  Take a vacation--check up on us, say, every one or two days, and I'll bet dollars to donuts that we, as a community, will be able to solve our own problems, and most of the time, we won't have any hard feelings that stay around for, say, a week.

Now that I have failed to contribute much, I'm gonna go find some more trouble to get into.....

Posted by kuru on Jun. 07 2002,00:17
Of course he should read it if he wants..

But trying to 'parent' all the disagreements isn't going to make anyone happy. Not us, and not editor.
Posted by Jynx on Jun. 07 2002,00:17
Nope, I'm just agreeing with whoever said that compulsive babysitting is not always healthy.

Of course Editor can check it whenever he wants - but just 'cause he can doesn't mean he should.

Editor is a very cool guy, from what I've seen in the little time I've known him.  It seems to me that he's feeling his way through this thing.  You have to admit this place can get way hot with flaming.  Respectful debating is great... personally assaulting someone and slamming them is not ok.  Isn't that the point editor is trying to get at?

the biggest problem is that kevin wasn't a community member before his purchase.  he doesn't know that this place has pretty much always been like this.  you can't always have good times and you can't silence the bad times.

kevin, i've been building story boards...well they're not really boards they're more like .txt files.. of the series events that have befallen this place since you bought it.  they're too depressing to animate for the most part.

you can't control what you buy. you can influence those that respect you.

kevin, good luck to you.
detnet community, stand behind kuru.  she seems to know what she's doing better than a great deal of us.

carpe diem.
