So Tyler and Narrator are the same person.

When Narrator shoots hisself through head and lives, how come Tyler dies?

Shouldn't they both die?

What is the real role of Marla Singer?

I would blame the bullet going through Ed Norton's brain for the death of Tyler.

Have you ever read "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat"?
Posted by forumwhore on Jul. 05 2002,16:05
No, I haven't.
What about that bullet?
Why does Norton live?
Posted by Necromancer on Jul. 05 2002,23:45
Because he assumed he would die when he shot himself and thought he had when he pulled the trigger and therefore tyler did too but norton didnt die because he was real. tyler did because nortons brain thought he had.

The book I mentioned is about a man with a brain injury that gives him a warped sense of reality. Fascinating case study about a real person. Nifty read.

There is a classic case about a man who had a railroad spike fired through his head in an explosion while building the railroads across the US. He lived, surprisingly. The only difference, is that it passed through the part of the brain that is responsible for social skills and interactions. He became belligerent and vulgar. The total polar opposite of his previous personality.

Somewhere I have an essay I wrote while bored about how all "sentient" human thought is a crock of shit cuz' it's all chemical. :D

well marla is the key to creating tyler.

without marla, "jack" would have kept going to the support groups, instead of having to find something else to help him sleep at night.

Continuing on from what necromancer said, jack shot himself through his cheek, which is why he lived.

Thanks you guys!

That helps somewhat.

FightClub was the first DVD I ever watched  and I am blown away!

I didn't know it is one of the best quality DVDs ever made though, and when I saw another movie I was underwhelmed a little.

Yes, I looked for Marla avatars but I didn't like any of them.

She absolutely carbonates my hormones.
Pity she's a Gemini!

fight club... so much hegel and marx.

anyway, key things... it's the testicular cancer group that finally get's jack to be able to sleep at night. The scene where he thinks of his "power animal" and he sees marla.

Tyler is a part of Jack, and you get him finally coming to grips with that in the end when he "takes" the gun from Tyler.
Posted by forumwhore on Jul. 07 2002,20:46
Well, you see him take control of his situation with the gun.
He figures it out, I think, when Tyler just *appears* in his hotel room.

Marla could always be my power animal....

Tyler Durden was already there before Jack went to those therapy groups. You can see him three times (for only one frame tho).

First when Jack is talking about his insomnia and how everything is surreal, you can see Tyler over the photocopier

Then when Jack's doctor tell him to go at the testicular cancer therapy group, Tyler appears with his arm around the doctor's neck (IIRC)

And after that, you see Tyler one last time before the airplaine scene, just after Marla joined the testicular cancer therapy group, and the exit of the church.

(sorry, no frame grabs :( )

Would you be interested in doing a bastardization of FC?

I'd want this DVD back, though, I really like it, and you seem most familiar with the movie.

Narrator could be Redhat Linux trying not to be taken over by the evil AOL. Or something.

Blownup buildings at the end could be AOL's servers or????

Maybe Marla is Unix not getting along with Linux so well.
Or maybe just a kernel that won't work quite perfect...

being aware of a situation and coming to grips with it, are two very different things, afterall, he does kick his own ass because he "sees" Tyler kicking it, does he not?

marla being his power animal is a symbolism thing, she's what he wants to be, she's got balls and he doesn't. That's why he's so comfortable with the testicular cancer people, cause they all also don't have balls. He feels like less of a man, that's why he "creates" Tyler, who's got big brass ones.

I think PG did one but I don't know if he ever finished (or if it improved from what I saw :D).

he started it, I remember it being full of penis references (or was that the ronin bastardization? both?) and only made it to a few pages.

Hey... haven't been to this chunk of the forums.

Anyway, to answer your question the best I can (seen the movie about 6 times, listened to the comentary tracks, read the book): In the book it was more of a symbolic act of 'Jack' finding his "happy place". When he shoots himself through the cheak it rips gap in his face all the way to his jaw bone (to match the rip on the other side from earlier in the book). He ends up with a gaping crooked smile all the way across his face that parrallels the smiley face that he leaves on Bob's chest in tears. His happy place at the cancer group alowed him to sleep, as does this one at the end. However the end of the book is a little different... basically both his personalities die and he's kindof a sleeping zombie.

In the movie it's again a sybolic act. Tyler is only a mental image of who he secretly wants to be. He tries to fight it the whole movie, but still finds something in Tyler that he wants. By then he gathers the strength to be HIMSELF and proves it by shooting himself (through the cheak... not the head). Watch then end of the movie when Marla is trying to help him and he says he's fine. Despite his bruised & bloody face... for the first time his sounds fine.

The line, "My eyes are open," I honestly still don't understand. I'll let you know if I ever figure it out.

Oh yah, and I did a bastardization. Didn't finish it, but it's 11 pages so far. I still have all the screens I need if I ever get time.

I love Fight Club.  It was one of many movies that opened my eyes into what I was becoming and who I didn't want to be.  Its one of those movies where you love it or hate it. And just about all that love hate revolves around the ending.

First time you watch the movie you think Marla is a nag and just tries to cling to everyone.

Second time you watch it and you feel BAD for Marla. She is being used and you can see it.

Third time...well you notice all the lil details that point to him being Tyler. Like when the car flipped, Tyler got out of passenger side of the car even though was clearly shown driving.

Anyone interested let me know and I can *cough* email *cough* them the book. An excellent read, especially if you liked the movie.
