Self-built PC...
Asus p4t mobo
1.7 ghz p4
512 mb ram
Geforce 3 Ti200
SB Live Platinum 5.1
And...my old 8.4 gb dinosaur hd used on my last computer

Upgraded it to XP (shut up NOW, free OS=best OS, and I'm not about to download Linux on 56k), defragged, cleaned the reg, blah, blah, blah...
A lot of things still run slow as SHIT though.  Any ideas why?  If it's the hard drive, I do have a 40 GB one sitting at my feet that I am simply too lazy to install.

probly ur hard drive.
system is only as fast as the hard drive.

definitely your harddrive.  win xp takes up more than a gig on installation. plus everything else you must have installed by now.  poor read speed etc.

first of all hook up the new hard drive and install system there is preferable. chances are your 40gig is faster.
either way, upgrading to XP is horrible idea! it keeps all the garbage from the previous windows and adds all the new crap. best way to do it, is format and clean install of a new OS and all software. always helps speed things up

What they said...

If you do reinstall, make sure to use the NTFS filesystem. Also make sure your IDE controller is in DMA mode and not PIO (see the device manager panel). (you may need to update the drivers for your IDE controller to get this to work optimally)

I just did the XP upgrade and the guys are right.  It filled my HD right up.  I had to uninstall a couple programs to have room just to defrag...
At least I did the NTFS thing.

btw....

Mr Captain!

How lovely to see you again;
Unfortunately, the narrator woman and I had a little falling-out.
If I can locate another narrator, off I will go again.

I nominate you to respond, if you wish, to Esterion's query.  Can you point him at something?

thanks

Hrm, I saw the thread, but I'm not really an expert on anything web-related... (video standards & software already change too fast for me!...)
