if you run large magnets over it, it should breath life back into it. That always works..

side note: Bummer dood, unless it will fire up from another system, I am guessing your outta luck

Interesting... a couple of weeks ago my drive died on the same day as my friend's. Mine made a brief high-pitched FZZZ when I turned on the computer one day... and that was it's last breath of life. My friend's drive was purchased as-is at a show for about 5 bucks, so we proceeded to give it the gravity test by dropping it from 2 stories high onto hard pavement, numerous times.

That wouldn't happen to be the 40GXP or whatever would it?

They don't call those the 'deathstars' for no reason, you know.

Go with a Western Digital. In the very rare problems that I've had with them, their 3 year warranty and good service make up for it in full.

i thought ibm deskstars were good drives..... hrm...
my dead drive was a 20 gig western digital. but im pretty sure its past its warranty

Rhydant, if you need a 'puter to hook that up to to see if it's trashed, I can help you out. I only have like 6 extra POS computers lying around. And you live like 15 minutes from me heh

or at least i think it did. the other day i booted up and got a Disk Read Error. i opened up the dusty ol case, and switched power cords 4 times, with the same result. i have no idea how in the fuck this happened.

so i think its dead.

is there any way to recover my data? i dont care if i lose the drive, but i had all my music and programs and pr0n. aaggghh!

If it is dead, it won't be cheap. Data recovery services usually charge quite a bundle. Did you have S.M.A.R.T. enabled on your system to warn you before it died completely?

I suggest taking it to another system and hooking it up to see what you can recover from it.

nah, im gonna go into the office at noon today and help the IT guy out a little bit. i kind of owe him, seeing as he gave me this computer. for free.

and if i cant get it working, im gonna go buy another drive. but thanks..... i think o_O

Posted by Rhydant on Dec. 08 2001,01:21
well, i couldnt get the damn thing to work, so i bought a brand new 40 gig 7200 prm Maxtor drive with a 256 meg-o-ram stick for 赔.
and im gonna get ๑ of that back from mail-in-rebates. all and all i think i did pretty good today.

now to download audiogalaxy and music city to pirate everything again heh.

the old deskstars were good, the new GXP's, well, IBM is facing a class action lawsuit about them.

Last drive that died on me was a western digital. Trust the bastard to do that about a month after the warranty ended as well.

Before you do the gravity test on it, I'm hoping that you've at least tried hooking the drive up to the secondary channel or made it a slave or something... ie, not made it a boot drive. Once you boot into windows/lunix/whatever, you've got a better chance of figuring out what's wrong with it. You may have lost all the data, but perhaps a good formatting will fix the drive. Couldn't tell you for sure, but the gravity test sort of puts a damper on tech support.
Posted by Rhydant on Dec. 08 2001,16:43
oh, im not stupid. im only gonna gravity test it if theres no way in hell taht i can fix it without paying alot of money.
Posted by aventari on Dec. 08 2001,21:43
dude, dont gravity test it, give it to me! I'll give you a 120meg you can gravity test and pretend it was your old one

ThatS only if your DriveS have lwoer wind resSitsances, st00pid. YouU need yoUr superturBomega caharger hookt to youre video card at a tangetnialn angle to be Ate maxkimum powers boosting and youre 5 inch lowerineg blowcks on your memory at maximum lowering capcities. Then you go FastAR.

Posted by Rhydant on Dec. 10 2001,04:39
i wanna put some 5-inch lowering blocks on my power supply, and hook up a nitrous in ethernet card. yeah

Hey Rhydant; don't forget to change the cam, put in solid lifters, and a new manifold!  I found out that my old car would accelerate just about as fast with a 2.73 rear axle as a 3.50.  and it got better mileage, too.  I could hit 65 mph before shifting out of first gear!  Never did find out how fast that combo would go.  Hit 125 mph and still accelerating, but I chickened out.

I haven't backed me up on disc yet!

Me, being a n00b, bought a VAIO last Xmas.  The s.m.a.r.t reported the drive would die  (sounds like HAL 9000) after the first 5 days.  I can't wait! to buy my next VAIO.

Wha!?  Vaio's kick ass.  I have a Vaio laptop that I use for just about everything at work.  Sony was smart enough to add firewire into their laptops which I use to plug into external disks.  Decent transfer rates (until USB2 is out) and keeps the internal drive free.  The only problem is I don't have all my pr0n when traveling :(
Posted by directhex on Dec. 28 2001,00:47
if vaios had geforce2, then they'd REALLY 0wn.

i hope usb 2.0 doesnt make fireware redundant as its a much more conveinient and more effiecient from of data transfer. i mean remember usb bandwidth is shared over the entre hub as i recall.
Posted by directhex on Dec. 28 2001,09:33
firewire networking. mmmmm.....  :D
