i've never experienced this extreme pain you're talking about, personguy. it's not like having anal sex causes some kind of back up that makes bowel movements misery. it does, however, stretch out the sphincter muscle, and if you do it without proper loosening up or lubrication, it is going to hurt. unless you're hot on the idea of giving a rimjob, get the astroglide, k-y jelly, or some other WATER BASED lubricant out and use your fingers.
personguy is right about the condoms. WEAR them. it's extremely easy to catch diseases and get infections from anal sex. the blood vessels there are fragile and close to the surface. also, a lubricated condom with nonoxynol-9 not only cuts down your chances of any sort of infection, but it'll make things much more pleasant. adding a lube like astroglide or k-y jelly is a good idea, but do NOT use stuff like vaseline. it must be water based, because anything else will break down the latex of the condom and you lose all the disease preventing benefits of having worn a condom.
the key with anal sex is to relax, use a lot of lube, and take it slowly, especially the first time.
