| Forum: The Classroom Topic: detonate.net book club started by: mqa Posted by mqa on May 21 2000,02:51i just had an idea: start a detonate.net book club. recomended reading for the true l33t hax0r. please limit you selections to published books otherwise we'll just get 65536 links to some geoshities page w/ a copy of the hackers manifesto on it.... so the inagural detnet book club selection is: read it and love it Posted by Vigilante on May 21 2000,18:57Cryptonomicon, also by Stephenson. (first post, w00t) [This message has been edited by Vigilante (edited May 21, 2000).] Posted by Anztac on May 22 2000,01:32YES!!! I've found Neal stephenson readers! I LOVE HIM! HE KICKS! I've read Snow Crash many a time, and am reading cryptonimicon for the god knowth time. Hehe hiro protaganist was a funny name. Those books Rox0red! If you want to be in the det.net l33t hax0rs book club you have to read Neil Stephenson, and the rainbow books. ------------------ "I am easily driven into a flying rage by blithering idiots" Posted by cr0bar on May 22 2000,03:07Haven't read his latest, but I've read every other book he's written (that I know of) The Big U, Zodiac, Snow Crash, Diamond Age. HIGHLY recommended =P Who knows where I'd be today if mqa hadn't lent me his copy of Snow Crash years ago? ------------------ Posted by mqa on May 22 2000,03:34those were the days... i got that book for free when i bought specter VR... opened the box, said "what the hell is this?! snow crash? sounds like a rip-off of 'alive'" threw it on my floor. six months later i was bored so i read it. and it changed my life forever... ahh nostalgia. ------------------ Posted by psYan on May 22 2000,14:02ok, I just have to say it: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams. Necessary reading for the serious hacker... sort of. Posted by Anztac on May 22 2000,14:53no not for serious hackers, for funny det.net type hackers ------------------ "I am easily driven into a flying rage by blithering idiots" Posted by marc c on May 22 2000,15:06The last book I read that I really enjoyed was the House of Spirits, which I'm sure only a few of you would enjoy. It's based on south american politics, and I really enjoyed the writing style. I really should read more; it's a shame that work and hobbies take up so much of my time. ------------------ Posted by Whirlwind on May 22 2000,16:56naah, reading? saw the movie anything with Winny the Puh bear Posted by eng_man on May 22 2000,22:25Books? What are those? Seriously though, I haven't had time to read a book in ages .. stupid work *grumble* The last good book I can remember reading is Robert Heinlein's Have Spacecuit Will Travel. That was a good one if I remember correctly. ------------------ Posted by Anztac on May 22 2000,22:28Heinlein's good. I've read his Stranger in a Strange Land (Damn I wanna be like mike) and Starship Troopers. I'm going to read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. ------------------ "I am easily driven into a flying rage by blithering idiots" |
