They obviously didn't do much beta testing with it, I've been readin the forums at gta3forums.com and there are more than a few people with "monster rigs" as it were that get shithouse performance. Of course, it doesn't help that it's using D3D which automatically gives it a big cut in performance right off the bat. The most obvious way to see that it's been rushed though comes from the way it hasn't been optimized at all for the PC architecture. It does not make use of memory at all compared to many other games, instead opting to stream stuff from the HDD. What they've done with this game exemplifies exactly what's wrong with the computer gaming industry as a whole.

Ill bet that a patch will come down the pipeline if the problems are that bad. Patching sucks too, because of later version conflicts (cant run your saved game on your buddys system because you dont have the same patches) Then they fail to test the patch, leads to more bugs, and a lot of pissed off gamers. Is there anyone out there who can give a good reason for not beta testing, and rushing your product to the market untested?

it's not amazingly bad. They have had to use a lot of direct x 8.1 stuff to keep the effects from the ps2 from the looks of it (the rain stuff slows my pc to a crawl because i dont have the latest kit). also the fact that they run a hell of a lot of stuff off of the cd-rom. my copy almost melted after the first day i got it.
I'm kinda pissed that they couldnt fully support my gfx card (kyro 2) but apparently that only caused a few minor texture issues not performance ones. All in all i can still run it pretty good at 800x600 res but it is pretty damn shocking at how badly it does run at such a low res

it's more than them whoring up the DX 8.1 effects. and it's rather obvious how little time they spent with the port of the game, there's a lot of idiosyncracies that should've been ironed out in the years they had to port it. The game isn't all that graphically impressive to be honest, which makes it more annoying when it runs like crap

yeah well i can fly the dodo for over 5 minutes so ner
i just hope they have the sense to patch a fucking LAN deathmatch or something in it. i don't care if it isnt brilliant as long as it has traffic all the weapons. Hell they can call it liberty city survivor
